Cookie Clicker artwork

Cookie Clicker is a single-player incremental game by Orteil and Opti. Your goal is to bake more cookies and increase your production over time. Cookies are both your score and your spending currency: buying a building lowers your current balance, but helps you earn the next batch faster.

The game combines active clicking with idle production. You can keep clicking the large cookie while your buildings work, or focus on choosing your next upgrade. There is no race against another player. The challenge comes from deciding how to turn today's cookies into a stronger bakery.

How to Play Cookie Clicker

  1. Click the large cookie. Each click initially bakes one cookie. Your balance appears above it.
  2. Buy your first Cursor. The first one costs 15 cookies and begins producing cookies automatically.
  3. Expand your production. Add more Cursors, save for a Grandma, and work toward buildings such as Farms and Mines.
  4. Read and purchase upgrades. Check the upgrade icons above the building store. Their effects can improve clicking, specific buildings, or your bakery's overall output.
  5. Collect Golden Cookies. Click these temporary visitors before they disappear to activate their reward.
  6. Reinvest and check your progress. Watch your cookies per second, review your Stats, and choose purchases that help you reach the next useful milestone.

You do not need an external autoclicker to start automating production. Cursors and other buildings provide that progression within the game.

This browser build uses a mouse-driven interface. The large cookie sits on the left, your bakery and menus occupy the middle, and the store appears on the right.

The store includes Buy and Sell modes, plus quantities of 1, 10, and 100. Check the selected mode and quantity before clicking a building. A desktop or laptop provides room to see the three-column layout clearly.

Buildings, Upgrades, and Cookies per Second

Cookies per second, or CpS, measures your automatic production. Your first Cursor starts at 0.1 CpS before upgrades. That may look small beside manual clicking, but additional buildings and multipliers steadily change the balance.

Buildings are repeatable purchases. Cursors lead into Grandmas, Farms, Mines, Factories, and increasingly unusual ways to make cookies. The next building of the same type becomes more expensive after each purchase, so buying another copy is not always the best use of your balance.

Upgrades change how your existing bakery performs. Some strengthen a particular building, some improve manual clicks, and others boost broader production. Read the effect before buying: an upgrade for a building you own many of can be more useful than another expensive building.

Check the production gained relative to the price. For example, a purchase costing 100 cookies and adding 1 CpS takes about 100 seconds to produce its own cost, before other effects. This simple comparison helps explain value, although upgrade interactions and temporary boosts can change the decision.

Golden Cookies and Temporary Boosts

Golden Cookies appear during play and remain available for a limited time. Clicking one can award cookies immediately or trigger a temporary effect. A Frenzy increases production, while a Click Frenzy boosts cookies earned from clicking.

Match your actions to the effect you receive. A clicking boost is an opportunity to work the large cookie actively. A production boost benefits your automated bakery. Read the effect rather than assuming every Golden Cookie gives the same reward.

Keeping some cookies available can also matter. Certain rewards depend partly on your current bank, so spending every last cookie immediately is not always the strongest choice once Golden Cookies become part of your strategy.

Achievements, Sugar Lumps, and Later Progression

Achievements mark milestones such as baking cookies, buying buildings, and reaching production goals. Open Stats to review your progress. Regular achievements also increase your milk level, which becomes useful with upgrades that draw on milk.

In a normal run, sugar lumps become available after you have baked one billion cookies across your runs. They grow over time and can be spent to level up buildings. These levels are separate from buying additional copies of a building.

Leveling the appropriate buildings unlocks additional activities: Farms have the Garden, Banks have the Stock Market, Temples have the Pantheon, and Wizard towers have the Grimoire. You do not need to master these systems to enjoy the opening game; they add decisions as your bakery develops.

Later Grandma research can also lead to the Grandmapocalypse, introducing Wrinklers and Wrath Cookies. This changes the way you manage production and temporary effects, rather than simply adding another ordinary building.

How Ascension Works

Ascension is a reset system accessed through Legacy. It lets you exchange a developed run for prestige levels and Heavenly Chips, which support lasting improvements through heavenly upgrades.

Ascending normally resets your current cookie bank, buildings, and ordinary upgrades. Achievements and certain long-term progress remain. Before confirming, check the prestige you would gain and the heavenly upgrades you can afford. The button becoming available does not automatically make it the best moment to reset.

For a first run, learn how buildings and upgrades work before rushing toward ascension. A useful reset should give you a clear reason to rebuild, such as an affordable heavenly upgrade that improves the next run.

Beginner Tips for Faster Progress

  • Use early clicks to buy production. Clicking matters most when your automatic output is still small.
  • Compare purchases across the store. A cheaper building or multiplier may provide more additional CpS for its cost than the newest option.
  • Check upgrades before a large purchase. Improving buildings you already own can change which purchase offers the best value.
  • Keep watching for Golden Cookies. Their rewards can be more valuable than a short burst of ordinary clicking.
  • Give saved cookies a purpose. Save toward a useful purchase or a reward strategy, rather than leaving your balance untouched without a plan.
  • Back up a run before major changes. Export your save before moving browsers or experimenting with an unfamiliar system.

Saving Progress and Offline Production

The game autosaves every 60 seconds and offers a manual Save option under Options. It also provides Export save, Import save, Save to file, and Load from file. Use these tools to keep a backup or move a save to another computer.

Browser saves depend on the storage available to the game. Clearing site data or switching to a different browser can leave your previous save unavailable. Keep an exported copy somewhere you can find it instead of relying entirely on the browser.

Saving your progress and earning cookies while closed are different features. Buildings produce cookies while the game is running. Closed-game production requires the appropriate heavenly upgrade, such as Twin Gates of Transcendence, and works at a reduced rate determined by your upgrades. A new bakery should not expect full production after closing the game.

If the game slows down, Options includes settings for particles, fancy graphics, and other visual effects. Reducing these effects can help on a less powerful computer.

Cookie Clicker FAQ

The browser game is free to play without installing an app. Separate editions on other platforms have their own availability and pricing.

This page features Cookie Clicker version 2.052. The version number identifies a release of Cookie Clicker; it does not make every game or project called Cookie Clicker 2 the same game.

Players commonly use this phrase when looking for a browser version they can access on their network. Whether a page loads depends on that network's settings, so access cannot be guaranteed everywhere.

Do I need cheats or an external autoclicker?

No. You can progress through normal clicking, automatic buildings, upgrades, and later ascension. Built-in automation lets your bakery grow without requiring external tools.

Conclusion

Cookie Clicker grows from a simple clicking game into a bakery full of interacting upgrades and production choices. Bake your first cookies, buy a Cursor, and compare what each new purchase adds. As your output grows, keep an eye on Golden Cookies and back up the bakery you are building.
